He can post if he wants, and he was just letting his opinion be known that he has no strong feelings towards the way the papacy turns out. Lets not start flaming people here, I don't think the Pope would like that...

What i see no flame, i simpley asked why he would need to post that.

To post something like that in a "New Pope" thread makes no sence.

I was raised catholic, however it appears that the church's continued conservatism is what pushes me away from religion. I doubt Ratzinger will attract many of the so-called "liberal catholics" (i.e. Most Irish Catholics)

lol i was watching the news before i went to school this morning and there was this story of a guy who made a website www.BenadictXVI.com and he was gonna give it to the vadicans for one of those pope hat things, to like sleep in this one hotel, and to be like relived of his sins from like the first time e met his wife O.o i know this isnt exact (not a good memory) but when i heard he requested the pope hat i fell on the ground laughing!!

also, i dont know why they have such an old pope, hes like older then the other one. i dont know if its like a religious thing to have an old pope, but i say get ready to have a new one in less then 20 yrs, but lets hope im wrong
(im not religious so if theres something about popes being elder, dont flame me O.o)

I'm catholic too and a mainstream one (not conservative, but also not liberal). Ratzinger wouldn't be my first choice, but there's one thing I completely agree with him: Better have a small group of true believers, than a big group with many believes. Consensus isn't the way to follow, you can't negotiate on your faith.

I would like to explain a bit about the selection. We Catholics believe that during the election the Holy Ghost helps the cardinals make a choice. In theory, that means that they can select anyone to be our next Holy Father. The Pope is the Leader of our Church, the replacement of Jesus Christ on Earth and the voice of God. This means that the qualities a Pope should have are based on his wisdom and his ability to talk with the autority vested in him. Age has nothing to do with these things. The former Pope John Paul the Second appeared weak to many, but that was only his physical part. His mind and spirit were guiding us, and that's all that matters.

I won't flame you for not knowing the details on other religions then your own, but I was very tempted to flame you for the lack of interpunction and spelling in your post.

This is just my guess, but I would assume that there are two main reasons for Popes being elderly, one being that it takes a long time to advance through the hierarchy enough to be a candidate. Also, you need to remember that the Pope is infallible, which means that he has to serve for life. The Vatican isn't stupid; they know that they don't want the same pope for 40 years, the same way the US wouldn't want a president that long (except maybe FDR). By picking elderly popes, the Vatican is guaranteeing that the Catholic Church will not stagnate, and will have fresh enrgy and direction with every new Pope.

along the lines of infallible, to my knowledge, if i remember correctly, infallible doesnt mean to serve for life, i think and hence think, it means to speak infallible means to speak from the chair of st peter, hence forth known as speaking from the ex cathedra, but yes he does have to serve for his own life.

Of course they're not synonymous, that wasn't the point I was trying to make. But if someone is infallible, they can't just be removed from office, that could cause serious problems. Imagine if a new pope were chosen while the old one was still alive, and imagine if the old pope decided he still wanted to be the pope. Both would claim to be speaking for God, and it would seriously hurt the church. Anything further is pure speculation, but you can probably see that having two different people with legitimate claims to infallibilty could cause problems.

I find it funny that he looks like the emperor from Star Wars. Anyway, I'm atheist so this doesn't really mean much to me. heh...

(PS: we ridicule Skylore enough for his bad grammer and spelling, no need to do it more)

Nope, sorry. You're wrong about that one.

You have to be a Cardinal to be able to vote, and yes, that can take a long time. For the last centuries, the Cardinals have chosen one of their own to be the next pope, but according to Vatican Law they chose whoever they want. It doesn't mean that it has to be one of them, it can also be a Bishop or a Priest or even a Layman.

I'm not ridiculing him on his bad grammer. But somewhere even the mods/admins have stated that proper grammer should be used while making a post. Secondly, why asking me to stop ridiculing someone, while you yourself are making a poor attempt to ridicule my Religion by comparing the Pope to a person from a movie......
